California made weed legal for adults in 2016, and LA has more shops than you could hit in a month. But legal to buy is not the same as legal to smoke anywhere. Public spots are off the table, most hotels say no, and the City of Los Angeles itself still doesn't allow a single consumption lounge.

So the move is simple. Smoke where you're staying if the owner is cool with it, or head to one of the handful of licensed lounges in West Hollywood and Hawthorne. Everything below is checked against current sources. New to all this? Start with the first timer's rundown on the actual laws.

Why the City of LA has zero weed lounges

Cities in California get to decide whether cannabis businesses can let people consume on site. LA city's Department of Cannabis Regulation says it plainly on its own site: consumption lounges and temporary cannabis events are currently prohibited. That covers a huge chunk of the map, from Venice to Hollywood to downtown.

It might not stay that way. In December 2024 Councilmember Padilla put forward a motion asking the department to study a lounge program, partly with the 2028 Olympics crowds in mind. A state law, AB 1775, kicked in on January 1, 2025 and lets lounges sell regular food, non-alcoholic drinks and show tickets wherever a city allows them. In December 2025 the department sent the City Council a proposed pilot: lounges only inside or right next to existing licensed storefront shops, with separate permits for edibles only and for smoking. As of late 2026 there's no sign it has been adopted. Until it is, the city has nowhere legal to light up in public.

Why West Hollywood and Hawthorne have lounges

West Hollywood is its own city, not part of LA, and it said yes early. By 2018 it was the only city in the LA area set up to license on-site consumption, with separate licenses for smoking lounges and edible-only spots. That's why the whole lounge scene is basically a few blocks of Santa Monica Boulevard plus La Brea and the Sunset Strip. Read more on our WeHo page.

Hawthorne, also its own city, got in later. Voters there approved a cannabis business tax in 2020, and the city cut the ribbon on its first cannabis shop in August 2024. That shop came with a lounge, about four miles from LAX. Handy if you land, check in nearby and want to sesh before anything else.

Licensed cannabis lounges in LA County you can actually go to

Each of these has an active state cannabis license and is operating in 2026. Bring a real ID, you have to be 21, and plan on buying from the house menu rather than rolling in with your own stash. Lounge hours shift a lot, so check before you go.

  • West Hollywood

    The Artist Tree West Hollywood

8625 Santa Monica Blvd, 2nd and 3rd Floor, West Hollywood, CA 90069

The lounge sits on the two floors above the dispensary, with art from the shop's gallery all over the walls and an open-air patio hanging over Santa Monica Boulevard. Past write-ups describe a clubby, library feel: bookcases, stained glass, a bar where the glass cases hold flower and concentrates instead of bottles. They run events too, the kind of thing where a comedy night or a drag brunch shows up on the calendar.

You need a valid ID at the door and there's a minimum spend per guest. Order off their menu, get comfortable, take your time.

TipAsk for the patio. Watching Santa Monica Blvd go by from up there is half the reason to come.

  • West Hollywood

    The Woods WeHo

8271 Santa Monica Blvd, West Hollywood, CA 90046

Woody Harrelson's place, co-owned with Bill Maher, open as a dispensary and lounge since 2022. It does not feel like a weed store. It feels like somebody dropped a jungle onto Santa Monica Boulevard: bamboo, green everywhere, a koi pond, and private cabanas you can have to yourself or split with a small group.

It's 21 and up to get into the lounge. You book a date, a time and a specific space, so this is more of a plan than a drop-in.

TipBook the cabana ahead for a weekend night. Walking up and hoping is how you end up waiting.

  • Sunset Strip, West Hollywood

    Sunset Social Club

8228 W Sunset Blvd, Suite B, West Hollywood, CA 90046

Opened June 14, 2025, at 4:20 pm, of course, right across from the Chateau Marmont. It's built as a members lounge with old Hollywood decor pulled from local estate sales, a coffee bar, an infused drinks bar and an outdoor patio garden. Zero tie-dye. The point is glamour, not a bong poster.

You don't have to be a member to get in. The club says non-members are welcome with a minimum cannabis purchase. Members get the run of the place and guest passes.

TipGood spot to start a Strip night. Sesh on the patio, then let a ride carry you down Sunset.

  • Hawthorne, near LAX

    The Artist Tree Hawthorne

    4756 W Imperial Hwy, Hawthorne, CA 90304

Hawthorne's first cannabis shop, and the lounge comes with it. It's a big room with local art on freestanding displays, hardwood floors and glass cases. You can order cannabis cocktails and pick from their huge catalog, and they bring it to your table.

Valid ID and 21 plus, same as the WeHo location. It's way more relaxed than anything on Santa Monica Blvd, and the parking is easier.

TipLanding at LAX with time to kill? This is minutes away. Get somebody else to drive you there.

What about the Original Cannabis Cafe?

The country's first licensed cannabis restaurant, at 1201 N La Brea Ave in West Hollywood, opened in 2019 under a different name, closed for years, then came back in 2023. In 2026 it's listed as temporarily closed. Its state license still shows as active, so a reopening is possible. Check before you make it the plan.

Smoking at home base and 420-friendly rentals

Private property is where most of LA actually smokes, legally. The catch is the owner gets the final say. Landlords and property owners can ban it, and plenty do, even in this town.

If you're booking a short-term rental, read the house rules, not just the photos. Some hosts spell out that smoking is fine on the patio or in the yard. Others ban it outright and charge a cleaning fee if they smell it. If the listing says nothing, message the host before you book. A yes in writing beats an argument at checkout.

Flower is the loud option. If your spot is shared walls or the host is iffy, edibles and a clean vape keep things quiet. Ask your doctor if you have questions about what works for you.

Can you smoke in an LA hotel?

Mostly no. California hotels treat guest rooms as smoke-free, and a property owner can ban cannabis on their property. That includes balconies. Light up in the room and you're looking at a cleaning fee and a very awkward front desk call.

Some hotels have smoking areas or are fine with edibles in the room. The only way to know is their published policy. Don't trust a listing that calls itself 420 friendly unless the hotel says it on its own site.

What you'll see around town

You will smell weed in LA. A lot. On Venice Beach the boardwalk has been a stoner landmark for decades: drum circles, skaters, street performers, and a haze drifting off half the benches. It's part of the scenery. See our Venice guide for the full picture.

Hollywood Blvd gets the tourist version, with sidewalk crowds and the occasional joint passing between costumed characters on break. The Sunset Strip is the late version: music venue lines, valet stands, somebody's vape cloud hanging under a billboard.

Technically, smoking on the beach, in a park or on the sidewalk is a ticket in California. People do it anyway, and you'll see it everywhere. Just be cool about it.

The move: smoke first, then go out

Locals don't hunt for a place to smoke mid-night. They sesh at home or at a lounge, then go out. LA is built for it. Late-night tacos, a dark movie theater, a sunset viewpoint: all of it hits harder after.

Plan the eating with where to eat high. For a screen and a cushy seat, check what to watch. And for walking around with your mouth open, there's what to see.

Getting home

Let somebody else drive. Driving under the influence of cannabis is a DUI in California, and LA traffic is hard enough sober.

Rideshare is the default. Order it before the couch swallows you. Keep whatever you bought sealed in its original package for the ride, and don't spark up in the back seat. Using cannabis in a moving car is illegal for passengers too, and your driver will not be into it.

Questions people ask

Can you smoke weed in public in LA?

No. It's legal to buy and carry, but smoking on sidewalks, beaches, parks or anywhere tobacco smoking is banned is an infraction in California. Smoke on private property with the owner's okay, or at a licensed lounge.

Are there weed lounges in Los Angeles?

Not in the City of LA. Its cannabis department says lounges are currently prohibited, though a pilot program was proposed to the City Council in December 2025. The licensed lounges near LA are in West Hollywood and Hawthorne, which are separate cities with their own rules.

Can I smoke in my hotel room in LA?

Usually not. California hotel rooms are smoke-free by default and owners can ban cannabis on the property, so expect a cleaning fee if you get caught. Check the hotel's own written policy before you assume anything.

Can tourists go to cannabis lounges in LA?

Yes. Lounges are open to any adult 21 or over with a valid ID, and out-of-state licenses and passports work. You don't need to live in California.

Do I need a medical card to go to a weed lounge?

No. Adult-use lounges only need you to be 21 with a valid ID. A medical card isn't required.

Can I bring my own weed to a lounge?

Plan on buying from the lounge's own menu. Some have a minimum spend or a minimum purchase to get in, and the house menu is how they run it.

Is Sunset Social Club members only?

It's built around memberships, but the club says non-members are welcome with a minimum cannabis purchase. It's on the Sunset Strip across from the Chateau Marmont.
